Matt, Tankless water heaters are a great idea (I use one at some rural property). But, they require water pressure or a pump to create such pressure/flow through the device. Considering the ancillary equipment and hook-up required, I'm not at all sure they are very applicable for "primitive" camping. Most places that tend to have "city" water, also tend to have shower facilities. When I camp off-grid, I must have simple and quick, rigging-up a reservoir, pump, propane tank and tankless heater is considerably more than most will want to fool with. Still, these new style water heaters can work very well. When my home tank-stye heater wears-out, I'll probably change-over.

I received an email ad this morning saying EccoTemp heaters are on sale for the next couple days at CampingWorld.com for $99. They're tankless heaters that run on propane, and have a handheld shower head. That's about $50 off normal pricing, but you need a Presidents Club membership ($15/yr) to get it. Good reviews on the site, but I don't own one myself.
