Sorry about that. The converter was humming.
I believe the smell was coming from the battery since when I opened the compartment below the closet inside there was an overwhelming smell and heat. I thought the prudent thing to do was to unplug from the house, open all the windows to air it out and to let the batter cool down. When I put my hand on the side of the closed battery box it was quite hot to the touch.
I’ll be able to check out the battery visibly tomorrow.
No, the refrigerator was off and empty.

First, we have converters, not inverters.
Now - did you do a sniff test to find where the odor was coming from? Did you test the battery to see what the voltage was? How did the battery look - sides straight or bulging? Did you happen to leave anything in the refrig when you closed it up?
