Debbie, you can get an idea of whether or not the fittings need greasing by pushing in on the tongue (takes some effort) until the tongue is completely depressed. Release it and it shouldn't take more than 15 seconds for it to expand to the fully-extended position. If it takes as long or longer than 15 seconds to expand, it needs greasing. If you don't wish to go that route, probably once a year should be adequate.

This is an estimate after doing this with a dozen or so T@Bs at a rally a few years ago where owners haven't had a problem with theirs.

If it takes less than 10 seconds, there is something wrong with the damper.
