Re: [A/S] Furnace Woes

Hunter,
Here is how the system works. First the fan comes on to evacuate all fumes
from the combustion chamber. Then the sail switch is supposed to close from
the wind produced by the fan. When the sail switch closes, the gas valve
opens and the ignition sequence is started. When you start the furnace you
should hear the fan run, then listen for the ignition sparking. It should
take about 30 seconds after the fan starts. After the ignition sparks you
should hear the propane ignite. There is also an overheat switch that cuts
the propane off if when the cumbusion chamber reaches a certain temp.
If you are not getting the ignition started it is probably a bad sail
switch, an obstruction in the air flow (normally caused by small critter
nests or mud in the air intake our output, or bad board. If you're getting
ignition but no light I would suspect a bad gas valve, empty gas tank or
again a bad board. I would also check the thermostat and wires. This is
easily done by shorting out the thermostat wires and trying to light the
furnace. If the furnace works, your problem is either the thermostat or the
wiring. I chased a problem like this several years ago and had a short in
my wires somewhere between the furnace and the thermostat which was
intermittent. The furnace would work fine, but would stop working in the
most inopportune time. Sometimes shutting the system down and restarting
would help, other times not. A few times I came home to an extremely hot
camper when the wires shorted together and kept the furnace running
constantly. Feel free to drop me a line off list and describing your
troubleshooting in more detail.

Last resort is a "0" degree sleeping bag :).
Pete
