All,
My old 1999 F350 (7.3) DRW crewcab long bed 4x4 with Manual, regularly
got 21+mpg. I hit 23mpg a couple of times with a tailwind. And this
only dropped to 18mpg while towing my 31' excella.
My next (and current vehicle) is a 2002 Excursion (7.3) auto, 4x4, it
gets 18-19mpg, and 16-17 towing. Not quite a good, but it can haul a
lot of people at the same time.
All in all, I think it's still competive with Gas versions of tow
vehicles, especially when considering the towing and comfort (towing
confort) levels that you get.
The F350 was better of the two for towing, longer wheelbase, and
cheaper overall, but the Excursion has turned out to be much more
flexible overall.

I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 with Cummings turbo diesel, 2 WD, mega cab
and
8' bed with a 6 speed and clutch. I am currently averaging 22.3 MPG
combined city/highway. I imagine that it would tow just about anything
towable.
My little Mazada Protege that I used to use as a commuting car only got
26!

What got my attention is the 16 city/22 hwy gasoline milage! Is this
really possible a F-150 with a 11k+ tow rating?
