Ford Motor Company has always inflated their HP and fuel econony ratings. In fact they have been slapped down in the
past by the Feds (EPA) for not being able to acheive their claims.
Tow vehicles need the High TORQUE ratings not the HP ratings that are achieved at the upper end of the RPM limits

The problem I run into with 1/2 ton trucks is not tow capacity, but rather load capacity. While they can safely tow my trailer, they don't have the cargo capacity to both handle the tongue weight, and haul all of the stuff I carry in the bed or on the roof racks , plus the people in my truck. If you don't carry all of that stuff and load your truck down a 1/2 ton would do ok. However, even with that said, 3/4 ton trucks are more heavy duty and better set up/safer for towing IMHO. I tow my 28' '99 Safari with a Dmax Chevy diesel. tows like a dream. That said, I think a 1/2 ton truck is a safer, more comfortable and all around better "daily driver".
