[tabtrailers] Re: Time for a new Tow Vehicle...thoughts on small SUV?

I have been towing trailers for the last 40 years and have towed to Alaska and lived there for 13 years as well as one trip around the US for 25 k miles.  Lots of trips around Europe and Africa in a car and tent earlier.  My early trailers were Airstreams (a 28, 31 and a 25 in that order).  I have towed both with Diesel and gas.  I had a Ford van with an International diesel engine and later a VW Golf diesel but not for towing.  Presently I have two cars, both SUV's.  One is a suburban with a v8 left over from the Airstream which I use to pull the T@B and it does very well.  I recently bought a Honda CRV which I tried to tow with but found it much underpowered (4 clinders) even in relatively flat Florida.  I will use it if needed as it can pull in a pinch.  Two further points:  The mileage pulling is within a mile or two of the same for both vehicles, somewhat surprising (about 15-16 mpg).  The other is that diesels are more expensive to maintain as they are fussy and cost a lot for all services and the fuel is much more than gas.  When I first bought the VW (which I no longer own after 130 k and 9 years) the fuel for the diesel was cheaper.  When the powers that be decided to reduce the sulphur and raise the price the economy went our the window. That is my two cents worth.  Best to all.

Tom in Florida.
