Hi Jim -- Here is my experience. I had a 24' Argosy, which I was pulling with a 1984 Ford pickup with a big V8, but I wanted a new truck, so I bought a 2000 F150 Supercab, short box with the small V8, a 432 Cu, I believe. It was a disaster at attempting to tow that little trailer in any sort of hilly environment at all. I had to lock it into low gear and pull at under 20 miles and hour.

So, I traded that truck in in 2002, with less than 10K miles on it, for a 2002 F150 7700 model (used to be the lite duty F250) Supercab, short box, with the 5.4L V8. That truck did an absolutely super job of towing the 24' Argosy. Then I moved up to a 31' 1978 Airstream International Sovereign, which is right around 5K empty, and can be, I believe 6.5K loaded. The 2002 F150 was just okay, but not great at towing the 31' Airstream.

In 2004 I traded off the 2002 (with about 15K miles on it) for an F250 Superduty diesel truck. This was a lot of good money thrown away in order to get what I needed. If I had been on this list, and had had the experience here, I would have at least cut one of those trucks out of the equation.

My advice is to carefully weigh what you read on this list, and then buy enough tow vehicle for your needs and if you have plans to move up to larger trailers, then buy for your future needs, as the truck will last a while. If I personally ever decide to full time, I have enough truck, even if I move up to a 34' Airstream. This leaves me with the comfort zone I want to be in.
