RE: [A/S] Rock Tamers

Hi Hunter,
I had the same problem with my big mud flaps, I solved the problem by
modifying the mud flap mounting, but learned the stinger became a "beast" to
deal with. The mud flaps added about 20 pounds to the weight of the stinger,
and being mounted perpendicular to the stinger made it very difficult to
handle and store.
You need to try and come up with a way to mount the mud flaps to the truck
hitch platform, so they can stay in place on the truck. You can then deal
with your stinger as you do now, without the extra weight and bulk. Each
hitch platform and set of mud flaps will need different mating to make this
work, but you are smart enough to figure yours out I bet.
You need to be careful when you set the distance from the bottom of the mud
flaps to the ground, with the trailer installed. I pretty well removed the
clear coat in places on the front of my trailer this passed summer on the
trip to Alaska. I had the mud flaps set up great for pavement, but realized
they were set to close to the road when there were loose gravel in piles and
small rows on the road surface. The mud flaps hit the tops of these high
spots, and kicked up gravels themselves. I did not pickup on this problem
until traveling through several miles of gravel covered road, and it was
already to late for my clear coat between my stone guards on the front of
the trailer. I had also picked up about a good wheelbarrow load of gravel in
the compartment where my horizontal propane tanks fit back in front of my
trailer. I had to dig my first empty tank out of the gravel in order to get
it filled.
I hope this keeps you from having some of the same kinds of trouble the
"good idea" mud flaps can cause if not properly installed.
