Jay, excellent advice. A couple of other points from our experience. Try to visit Sequoia and Yosemite during weekdays. Though the time of year you are traveling is great due to a reduction in families (kids back in school) they are still crowded on weekends because they are popular weekend trips from locals (Bay area, primarily.) You might consider dropping south from Salt Lake City and stopping by Arches and Canyonlands near Moab on your way back east.
Don't forget Petrified Forest on your way to GC. Check out http://www.roadsideamerica.com/ to find interesting and odd treats along your route. For example, there are several Route 66 museums along the way, and the Mojave Museum in Kingman, AZ.
