They got heavier when they got away from clad aluminum for one thing. The old metal was .032 and the new metal is .040 due to the fact that the clad aluminum was harder and the new is softer.
Then there are microwaves, lots of resin in the floor, I have a feeling the plastic tanks are a lot heavier than the old tin ones.
