Digging a hole and backing up so the outlet is aligned with it is the
recommended method in the owner's manual for my '66 Caravel. I thought that
if I was camped out in Yosemite Valley and the ranger got upset I would just
show him the book and he would immediately understand that my trailer was
"grandfathered" for dumping in the campground. As an afterthought we
installed a holding tank.

I used to dig a small hole about 16" deep when at a primitive camp site and
run gray water into the hole with a water hose. I cover the hole back up
after inserting the hose to the bottom. You usually will never even see a
wet spot. You can always throw a cap of bleach down the sink if you have
concerns.
