Steve,
Airbags (like Air Lifts) are essentially an air spring. [actually a helper
spring which uses compressing air as the spring medium] This technology
produces a very linear functioning "spring" (where the resistance is a
direct function of the displacement.)
From a suspension standpoint, adding air springs only makes sense if your
springs (typically the rear) are inadequate for the load, or you wish to
stiffen (or adjust) the ride. The air spring can be made stiffer simply by
increasing the pressure in the air bag - just like the Sleep Number Bed.
Air springs have been used on many high performance touring cars - the most
famous being the Mercedes 300 SEL of the 70's.
The weight distributing hitch is an ingenious mechanism for transferring
some of the tongue (hitch) weight forward to the front wheels, thus
maintaining the normal attitude of the tow vehicle suspension to the ground.
This doesn't change the spring rates of the two vehicle suspension.
