I did the same thing with the Ikea shelf. It's actually just a bar that I installed, and the small shelf hangs off of it. We remove the shelf while driving.
The other thing I installed and was super happy about was the Ikea stainless steel paper towel holder. I put it just to the right of the door on the inside.
I was VERY nervous about screwing into the walls but it turned out great. I did try to locate the supports using the diagram in the files here, and a stud sensor. Worked great.
