[tabtrailers] Re: Generator

It is good advice to see if you can actually hook your TAB up to a generator and try it out with the Cool Cat. However, from my experience, there is not a problem starting the Cool Cat up -- even with our Honda 2000 generator. The problem was when it reached the thermastat setting and powered down, and then powered back up. The Honda 2000 could not handle the power needed to cycle the generator back on to start cooling again. Too bad, because I loved that little Honda and could lift it in and out of the back of the van by myself. We now have the larger Honda Handi 3000 which will run the Cool Cat and anything else that we need. Running the Cool Cat was important for me because we often camp at race car parking lots on black-top in the heat of the summer. Last year was the hottest Indianapolis 500 on record, and our Honda 3000 cooled the whole TAB and the tentroom!I do not have any experience with the Yamaha or Kipor generators to know how they function with the Cool Cat.

Had we known, we could have done this...the RV place had a 2400 on display and wouldn't have minded hooking it up to our t@b.. Do this and then crank the cool cat way down and see what happens. Since it's been reported that some do OK with the 2400, you'll your answer real quick.

Interestingly, our 2800 was like 10 lbs lighter than than the 2400, although it's footprint is larger. Luckily it still fits in the t@b door, so we can carry it inside...another important criteria for us.

Most of the generator sites (like Yamaha) have wattage charts that tell you what consumes what, and recommends the size for your needs.

Some have had it work successfully with a 2400, some like us...weren't able to. We bought a Yamaha 2400...all literature and sales person said it would run the coolcat...got it home...would kick off when the coolcat compressor cycled on...took it back and got a Yamaha 2800. A/C is imperative to us, so we had to do this, but your needs, temps/locations may be different.
