[tabtrailers] Re: no electricity when plugged in

Jerry, sorry for the confusion. We have a 12 Volt fridge, which I have been running on low, turning off for a bit and running on low again. I know it is a power sucker for battery power. The heater is a little electric cube heater, not sure on the voltage, I am at a star bucks now, recharging my computer, so can't check. I'm sorry I don't have a very clear understanding of the whole electrical thing, probably contributes to the confusion a lot. Is an DC outlet, shore power? I am not sure what I would even be looking for if I pulled the panel, or how to even do that. Tony is blind, so he isn't much help in that category. AC is when it runs off the battery? At this point we have resigned ourselves to keeping the trailer tolerably warm, but not toasty, as we normally would. We are bundled up, It's far to cold to be without heat completely, grateful we can at least run the heater some. Perhaps my battery isn't holding a charge. I topped it off with distilled water before it was hooked up , it wasn't dry, although it ran the heater on the lowest heat last night. This is our first time out this season, never had so many things go wrong, so please excuse the frustration. Only camping because we are here to have some work done on our bicycle. Normally wouldn't camp this early. I keep thinking it must be one of 2 things, the camp ground has a circuit break somewhere or the trailer does. I have checked all the circuit breakers several times. Don't know if the outlets worked at home, but the lights did, and the fridge did. We don't think the campground DC, regardless of what the voltage meter shows, (if that is what shore power is,) is working at all, although, as I mentioned, the DC did at home. Perhaps it is several problems. Whatever it is, we'll deal with it when we get home, along with the water pump that we think wasn't winterized correctly. We have 2 more nights here, hopefully tomorrow will be warmer. we'll snuggle close and get through. :o)
Thanks for your efforts. I saw the great diagram of the t@b wiring in the files, wish we had more t@da info there. I'll be sure and post whatever solutions we find to these problems, hoping they can help someone else. Once again thanks for the attempt to help. if you come up with anything else, let me know.

> Pam, your description is confusing. If one AC outlet will run the the heater, then you are getting power from the campground power source to the trailer, and to that outlet. If you are not getting power from the other outlets, then there is an open wire someplace, or a tripped circuit breaker. What was not clear to me is the fact that you also refer to having to run the car to charge the battery. If you are not getting 12V out of the converter to keep the battery charged, that--along with the lack of power to the other outlets indicates a loose wiring connection someplace. The fuses have nothing to do with the AC outlets--they are only for the 12V functions. If I had a wiring diagram for the T@DA, I could really help you isolate the problem. I had hoped someone more familiar with the T@DA wiring would have gotten back to us by now.

Also, even though the circuit breakers may appear not to be tripped, physically switch them off and flip them back on.

Remember, both 12VDC and the 120VAC are power, so it is a little confusing when you say there is strong power when the car is running--surely you are not using a 12V heater--??? A fully-charged battery should last a day or two with no problem for its functions without having to be recharged, as long as you are not running a refrigerator, especially a three-way in the 12V mode, from it--that will take a fridge down quickly.

Have the battery charging from the car again now. Computer is running out of juice too, so I'll keep this short. I'll do the breakers again, although none were tripped. The only thing that was out of the ordinary was the little thing that is a reset on the plug. My surge protector indicates no problem with surges. Strong power when car is running and trailer is plugged in. Oddly enough, only one plug in will run the heater. It is all so strange.

My guess is that you either have a short someplace that is tripping a circuit breaker, an open lead in the wiring between the camp power and the 120V wiring inside the trailer, or something that is tripping a circuit breaker. A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) will take care of a string of outlets, so a problem with something plugged into another outlet can cause it to trip power to all those outlets. I'm trying to contact another T@DA owner I know who has extensive electrical experience and knowledge and hope he gets back to you soon. It only got down into the low 40s at night last year when we were at Glacier and other locations last August, but it was very uncomfortable without power, so I can certainly sympathize with you.

At home we plugged into the power in the garage, all was well, fridge got cold, had lights. Get to the campground in WI, and plugged into the shore power and had no power. Very cold last night, 29 degrees, same predicted for tonight. Put our space heater on low, snuggled under the quilts and survived the night. This morning, the camp ground guy came and checked out the electric and it is all fine, but still no electricity from shore power in the trailer. No fuses are lit up, showing they are blown, I tripped the reset on the plug by the counter, nothing happen. We have been running the car now and then to keep the battery charged. But really would like to have shore power going to the trailer by tonight. This happened one other time and it was just some simple little thing, but I can't remember what it was. any suggestions are appreciated. The high today is only supposed to be 40. Not a good time to be without full electric power. Once I get this figured out, you can bet I am writing it down.
