You inquire whether your existing rails being adequately secured to support slats. The rails I attached are snugged up against some sort of composition/plywood, but behind that there is a solid strip of wood. I used 2" countersunk #8 screws which penetrated all three layers -- the rail I was attaching, the composition/plywood, and the sold strip of wood behind the composition/plywood.
If your present rail-installation replicates that, then I'd say you are in good shape.
I used five screws to secure each of the two rails, which was mostly an educated guess on my part.
I did not install any vertical supports because I noted that the existing strips of wood behind the composition/plywood layer already have vertical supports on each end.
I'm no expert, and someone else may have other thoughts, so please take my comments as "For what it's worth" information.
You are lucky to already have rails installed.

Are those not strong enough for the slats, so that I'd be better off replacing them? It seems like everyone who does the slat mod has actually put in the supports.
