I towed with a 2009 Subaru Forester (2.5L 4 cyl) in the mild hills of Ohio. On the slightest grades the 4 speed automatic tannny would drop to 3rd gear. It also "hunted" back and forth from 4th to 3rd occasionally on flat highway.
I would not recommend the Subie. I now tow with a Nissan Xterra (V6 with 5 speed automatic) and I am very satisfied.
Best of luck in whatever you choose.

I think I understand that engine size relates to power and power relates to gas use (very simplified) and that I should aim for something like 15 mpg and be happy about it. I feel like it comes down to this (for me): will I be able to maintain average uphill speed in the twists and turns on PCH? And, after all my towing, will I still be confident that my TV is operating without undue stress to it's parts? And so my search came down to a Volvo CX-90 or a Suburu Forrester--two slightly different classes, as I understand it. I'm bucking for the Volvo--I've always driven Volvo's and the engine is more powerful and this has got to mean something, right? Love to have some feedback here. Thanks.
