Hi Folks,
You may recall that last fall my '73 Armstrong AC went toes up. At the
suggestion of several people, I found someone willing to climb up and
look at it from the non-RV AC world. I set up the ladder for him, had
the shroud off and generally did everything possible to help him out.
He said that the motor that ran the fan that cools the condenser was
dead. We thought at first that we could just replace it, but they don't
make that kind anymore, I don't remember what its vitals were, but there
were none to be had anywhere. So, my AC guy sent me to an electric motor
repair place, where for less than $100 they rebuilt the old motor, put
on new wires, and even painted it!
I crawled up there and put it in and even managed to get it all wired in
place ( he had labeled all the wires), and then got him back to check
and bless it.
I'm sitting here in 99 degree heat and the old girl is thundering away,
it will easily drop the temp down to 78 or so. I think it cools better
than newer ones. There might be things I could do to make it quieter, I
suspect the rubber mounts are hard, but if it ain't broke....
The shroud blew off in a microburst over Christmas and did some damage
to itself. I decided not to buy a new one, and got out the fiberglass
out. I patched up the cracks, and then did a quick coating over the
whole thing, and then put on two coats of silver paint. So all that
looks great now!!
Another thing I replaced was the kitchen sink faucet. The original Moen
wouldn't turn off except in certain positions, I bought a new one, just
plain brushed stainless, but oh woe, the old one is soldered on to the
pipes! After much worrying and harassing people in Lowes and HD and any
other hardware store that still let me in, I got a tiny pipe cutter, and
a fitting with a compression side and the other a standard screw on to
the bottom of the faucet fitting. My friend Steve wormed his way under
the sink, and the deed is done. Much better!!
If anyone wants the old one, it might be repairable, and it is original.
Just want shipping, or it's going in the dumpster.
Everything else is working great!
Life is good.
Right now I'm in San Antonio NM, volunteering at Bosque del Apache
National Wildlife Refuge. This is where all the Sand Hill Cranes and
Snow Geese gather for the winter and is a birder mecca. Right now it's
pretty quiet, although the Rio Grande keeps this place a green oasis in
the desert. Sometimes I do trail work, sometimes I sit and welcome the
visitors. I'll be here until Sept and then ????
