Thanks for the comeback Patrick,
From what I've gathered after reading emails send to me by other
Station Wagon Classic Car owners and by checking the NADA guidelines,
my 1975 Mercury Colony Park Station Wagon's value with factory
trailer towing package, dual exhausts, 460 CID, new vinyl roof,
immaculate vinyl wood grain sides and everything working except the a/
c - is in the ballpark value of: $4,000 low retail, $7,500 average
retail, and $13,000 high retail.
My local mechanic (www.mabeys.com) is almost ready to rejuvenate the
a/c for me. Then, it will blow snow flakes on a hot humid day (:-)
like it did during previous years when we were towing our Airstream
around the continent during July and August vacations.
The couple who bought our '63 22' Flying Cloud last week will have
another chance to look at our Station Wagon next week when they come
to our house for "supplies" I unexpectedly found while reorganizing
our cellar. The Mercury was of interest to them then, but a few days
later - after I figured out an asking price, they passed on it. As a
reminder of what they passed up, I may send a copy of this note to them.
I suspect anyone offering something in the ballpark of $6999 will
have a deal. It's such an awesome tow vehicle that I'm not anxious to
sell it. But, from what I've seen on the market; any RV owner looking
for a tow vehicle will be hard pressed to find anything more suitable
for towing a travel trailer; especially - a vintage travel trailer.
I'm perfectly satisfied to keep the Merc as my daily driver every
year between May and October, then put it back into hibernation until
next Spring. That's what I've done since the late 1970s and am still
doing. I even have a solar panel in the garage window connected to
the battery to keep it fully charged - year round. What else? Oh yes,
the garage has awesome protection 24/7/365 against curious mice.
Everyone has their idiosyncrasies.
Why have we kept this Mercury so long? Maybe because it has been such
a reliable and capable tow vehicle, or its new car smell is still
obvious (I love the fragrance), or my sense of contentment while
inside it, or its responsiveness when I ask it to step out lively
(with Airstream in tow).
Compared to cars of today, this Mercury Station Wagon is truly
substantial. It is a genuine Detroit iron behemoth that's ready for
bear, quick on its feet, and exudes a quiet aura of powerful
performance capability when parked in any driveway.
While rolling down the highway safely ensconced in the spacious seats
with seat belts and head rests, there is an unspoken awareness of
riding inside a time capsule that's also a iron fisted life insurance
policy. If there's ever a (heaven forbid) collision or crash with
another car, there's a high probability of walking away from it -
rather than being carried away.
I'm rambling. Sorry about that. Thanks again for getting back to me.
I appreciate your suggestion and will follow up on it.
Stay sharp, think smart and keep on enjoying your 1955 Airstream,

PS - After I wrote this reply to you and did a final proof read, I
thought it would be worth sharing with other Airstream owners who
might know someone looking for a Classic Car Tow Vehicle. When I
looked up your name on the Airstream list, I didn't find it. Perhaps
you'd be interested in joining the Airstream List yahoo group. It's a
great place to learn details that other Airstream owners know; the
moderator runs a tight ship; the members are friendly and
exceptionally knowledgeable; and the only cost is whatever 2 cents
you offer. Just a thought (my 2 cents) - in case you're interested.
I'm also a member of a yahoo group for owners of Station Wagons in
the North East, so I'm sending this note to them also. My Mercury
Station Wagon may be seen at http://www.pandstrailerservice.com/
