I think it will be simply a matter of adding another box and battery, but will this affect the original inverter until I can get the system upgraded?

The original thingy is a converter (changes 120 v ac to 12 v dc to keep your batteries charged) but an inverter does just the opposite (changes 12 v dc to 120 v ac to run small appliances when you are not plugged into shore power). The original converter should keep two batteries charged but probably not three or four. Generally it's nice to have a converter that can supply at least 20 amps per battery and I think the original converter is rated at about 45 amps. Eventually you may want to add an inverter and some of the larger inverters can do double duty and charge your batteries when connected to shore power.
