Chip,
We put a foam mattress set from Knox Foam in our '77 Airstream. It was a
set of three 3" memory foam pieces that all fit into a cover. I was able to
roll each piece up and get them into the trailer then unroll them on the
cover while on the bed. Took a little manuevering to get the thing all
zipped up but it worked out great. The three pieces were a soft, medium and
firm memory foam. You put the one on top that you prefer. I had built a
new foward aft king bed but it was a little smaller at the head due to the
shape of the trailer and a little shorter. I simply cut the foam before
installing using a template. We like the memory foam more than the $2K
mattress we put in our bedroom a few years ago.
Only problem is that I can't find the Knox Foam website anymore and don't
know if they are still in business. I'm sure there are many more foam
mattress businesses out there though. They did offer custom cutting with a
cover to match. I found that ours was so close that the cover they sent
with the original size works fine.
Another option is to contact a marine mattress maker and have one made.
I've seen their mattresses that fold so you can get then through doors and
around furniture and walls. They do look like they will cost a bit more
though.
I would definitely recommend trying the foam first. Extremely comfortable
and reasonably priced.
Pete
