Thanks, Rick - all very good comments and important for every internet
user to remember.

The one exception is messages encrypted with a very long, truly random
key. I can't afford that, and my recipients won't do it.

Not only by the ISP, but by anyone with the requisite skills (think
Russia).

True, and of course that was not what I meant. The providers do archive
the traffic,

That was a copyright issue. Hackers rarely concern themselves with
copyright.

Of course true. But the average user isn't the threat, it is the
skilled user.

That would work if the other end of the transmission used VPN. But in
reality, how often does that happen.

Safe enough for most purposes, but only because we have nothing of
interest to the hackers except credit card and bank account numbers -
which are hacked and sold regularly (think Russia again).

Of course. But we do it all the time.

All effective in some situations. But most of the time most users find
these cumbersome, so use the less safe methods.

Sad but true.

Very nice exchange. I appreciate your interest, but Hunter probably
would be on our backs again about being off topic if I posted this to
the list.
