I have been watching this thread with some interest and have not noticed if we are discussing AM or FM bands.
The FM band should surely benefit from the external antenna enhancements.
However, many / most portable radios use an internal ferrite rod for AM which is not connected to the whip antenna. If this is the case then no amount of alligators will help.
