HA! I grew up on Long Island in the 1960's Every summer, we would load up the station wagon and head out to visit family in the mid-west and/or go touring around the country. I too, remember vividly the "Smells of Secaucus". In 1982, I was getting ready to leave my assignment with the 298th Army Band in West Berlin for a stateside posting. My then-wife wanted me to get assigned back to Fort Devens so we could be close to our families (we moved to Mass in 1972), but the only assignment I could get on the east coast was with the 389th Army Band at Fort Monmouth NJ. I was absolutely disgusted at the thought, all I could really remember about Jersey was the stench of the pig farms and oil refineries! Once I got to Fort Monmouth, I was, of course, pleasantly surprised the not all of the Garden State is like that. I got out of the Army in 1986 and never left New Jersey. If it weren't for the taxes and corrupt politicians, it would be perfect!
