Truer words n'er were spoken. My (mother's) family has lived there
since 1845, in most parts of the state, and most of my relatives still
are there. I spent a good part of my childhood there, adored it, and
still own a house in New Braunfels. However....

Hate to be a spoilsport, but simply not so. I'll take an occasional
rattlesnake any day over autos and semi's. The air - which really was
crystal clear in the 1940's - now is lethal. Water? - one could drink
or swim in any of the streams in the 1940's - now you have to confine
your swimming and drinking to treated water. Eco laws are among the
loosest in the nation.

Wide open spaces (who remembers Laurie Anders) in the 1940's, it has
become so crowded it might as well be New Jersey. The little farm house
my great-great grandparents built at the top of the hill in Round Top
was bought up by a Houston millionaire and today is a tourist trap along
with the rest of the town. Haven't been to my New Braunfels house in
years - the town has boomed to the point of being intolerable.

I suspect Jim would back me up on most of this.

True. I'm just mourning the passing of the old west - part of which I
was fortunate enough to experience. I really regret the my
grandchildren never will be able to see it.
