This is probably stupid, but my rig is completely original and I am reticent replacing original stuff if at all possible.

Hi Chip,

The modern 12v florescent light uses an electronic ballast and generally they are not intended to be repairable. But they can be replaced. You didn't say what make and size this fixture is. I've been replacing the guts of my 12 inch florescent fixtures with LED conversions, so I have the electronic guts of several old fixtures lying around. If you can find a name on your fixture or take a picture of it maybe I have something that would help you. I'm not into the "completely original" school but I'm glad some people are.
