Washing the curtains will only work if the fabric is still relatively
intact.
Drapey fabric tends to "rot" from exposure to sunlight, and lose their
strength.
Most likely, your drapes will disintegrate if you try to wash them.
Try washing one to see what happens.

Yes, drapes do provide an insulating effect. Mr. Ambrose uses a Millium
insulating lining which reflects sunlight, protects the interior drapery
fabric, and prevents see through at night with the lights on.
