Hi Mary,
Tow/Haul is a feature on recent Ford trucks that changes the shift
points of the automatic transmission based on engine RPM. The concept is
to use a higher output torque range of the engine power when towing a
heavy trailer and causes the engine to rev to a higher RPM before
shifting than it does when in normal economical mode (not in Tow/Haul).
Tow/Haul also causes the transmission to shift to a lower gear at a
higher RPM when decelerating allowing the engine to take more of the
deceleration load of the trailer mass saving on brakes wear and tear.
On my 2004 F350 diesel, its a simple pushbutton on the end of the
gearshift selector arm and it can be pressed at any time when driving
whether towing a trailer or not. When not towing a trailer, I will
often use it when decelerating down a long grade with a stop light at
the bottom rather than ride the brakes all the way just as I would when
towing a trailer...
Hope that helps...
