What do Formula 1 Race cars, the Arctic Circle and a tsunami have in common?

Everything Everywhere Logo

Dear Marieta,

Hello from Quito, Ecuador!

It has been a long time since I've last sent out an email to everyone. I want you to know that I'm not only still alive and traveling, but I've been busier than I have ever been. Since I last sent you an update I've been to over 20 different countries! I took a ride in a 180 mph F1 race car in Valencia, Spain, was in Hawaii during the tsunami, visited the tiny countries of Liechtenstein and Andorra, gazed at the stars in the Canary Islands, and crossed the Arctic Circle!

Last week I had the pleasure of visiting the Galapagos Islands for the first time and tomorrow I'm off to New Zealand to follow the Australian rugby team at the Rugby World Cup!

The rest of 2011 has me busy as well. I'll be in Los Angeles for Blog World Expo from Oct. 24 - Nov. 6. I'll be attending the World Travel Market in London from Nov. 7 - 11. I'll be roaming around France by rail for the two weeks afterward, finishing my journey in the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey.

I'll also be releasing my first iPhone app later this month, which will give you access to over 750 travel photos for you to fantisize about your next trip, and a new photo every day!

I'll be talking to you again soon. I have some help now so I hope to be getting back to sending these out on a regular basis again.

Please feel free to send this email to anyone you know who loves to  travel!

Keep traveling!

Gary

Arriving in New Cities After Dark

Hong Kong at Night I just arrived in Quito, Ecuador. My flight landed at 11:15pm and by the time I got out of the airport through what was perhaps the least efficient passport/customs control I've ever seen, I finally took a cab and arrived at my destination. [Read More...]

Cruising as an Independent Traveler

The Carnival Magic Last May I was invited onboard the Carnival Magic for its inaugural cruise from Venice to Barcelona. With that cruise I have now been on a whopping 3 cruises in my life, which probably takes me out of the category of a rank novice but a far cry from the 100+ cruises that many people I met on board have been on.  [Read More...]

8 Things You Might Not Have Known About Ecuador

Ecuador Flag For the first time since I began traveling non-stop in 2007, I am in South America. I have no particular reason why I haven't been to South America, I just never got around to it. I'm in Quito, Ecuador right now and tomorrow I'll be heading off to the Galapagos Islands. It is the beginning of what I hope will be more exploration of Latin America over the next year. I figured it was a good time for another installment of "8 Things..." [Read More...]

September 2011 Q & A

Czech Post Box The following questions have been delivered by Pony Express, processed by the Dwarves of Mal-Kunath, scanned and security tested by the best and brightest TSA agents, and finally kept in a hermetically sealed mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wagnall's doorstep. This my dear friends, is the September 2011 Q&A!

World Heritage Site #11: Yakushima

From the World Heritage Inscription: "Located in the interior of Yaku Island, at the meeting point of the palaearctic and oriental biotic regions, Yakushima exhibits a rich flora, with some 1,900 species and subspecies, including ancient specimens of the sugi (Japanese cedar). It also contains a remnant of a warm-temperate ancient forest that is unique in this region."

Yakushima is a very special place. About an hour ferry ride from Kagoshima, the interior of Yakushima (Yaku Island) is several thousand feet above sea leveland often in the clouds. Not only is it a beautiful place, but the food I had in Yakushima was some of the best I've experienced in my life.
