Subject: [A/S] Mouse Tales

Hi, my name's Rita…and I have mice.

They came on board a year ago while I was parked at Falcon State Park in Texas (near the bird feeding area). I got some CabSafe, and I think some mice left, but at least one didn't. I subsequently used every known mouse trap and bait, including the blood thinner type used by exterminators, but the mice know enough to stay clear of them. I mixed some poison in peanut butter once, only to find the peanut butter eaten, but the poison granules left. Also tried the bucket of water method: heard a splash in the night, but there was no mouse in the bucket in the morning.

The mice have never chewed through any food packages in my pantry. They sleep in the walls and ceiling during the day and go out for food at night. Several times I pretended to make camp in a rest area and then pull out in the middle of the night, hoping to loose a few of the critters. But I'm getting to old to be towing my trailer around in the middle of the night.

I think the initial entry point was around the tires. I had the openings sealed, but the mice have found other ways in. Young ones are even able to enter through the windows. They squeeze between the glass and the gasket (?).

At one time, the mice formed an alliance with a least squirrel. It came through the air conditioner. I had long worried that one would get in, they are so small, and one finally did. I had the air conditioner cover lined with hardware cloth and, I think, the squirrel is now gone.

My mice have one unique quality. They communicate with each other by making a tapping sound on the wall. When I walk to the other end of the trailer I often hear the tapping, warning any mice out of the wall to get back in. They also know my routine for preparing to leave a site and will tap to alert others. This tapping and the failure of the bucket method makes me wonder if I have some variant type of mouse or a small rat. Their droppings are mouse sized though.
