Tony,
Not sure if they were my pix or not but I took the boxes out of my '77. You
have to take the whole assembly out of the trailer from the outside. The
frame and door assembly is riveted onto the body and the lip of the battery
box is sandwiched between the door assembly and the coach body. Just drill
out the rivets and pry the thing apart. There will be lots of sealant
between the parts.
I had a couple of pieces of aluminum blanks made to rivet back on to the
body to cover the outside, put insulation on the inside then put a patch
panel over the inside hole.
Do you plan to do a lot of dry camping? Two 8d's are a lot of capacity,
space and weight not normally needed for the occasional camper.
Although the batteries are sealed I would recommend a battery box for them
even inside the camper. You can find several types at marine suppliers as
the 8d's are used in a lot of sailboats.
I have pictures of the frames and the camper without the boxes but not of
the assembly together. I already gave the frames away and threw the damaged
boxes away. I ended up putting a
single group 34 battery on the tongue where the vacuum brake used to
located. Let me know if you want the pictures I have.
Pete

Subject: [A/S] Battery box removel
A while back someone had pictures of there trailer showing patches where the
battery boxes had been removed. Can someone tell me how to remove the
battery boxes doing the least damage to the trailer? I'm making the jump
from four group 27 batteries to two 8D's. These are sealed AGM (Lifeline /
Sunxtender) batteries and the boxes have to go to make room for them.
TIA,
Tony
