RE: [A/S] Tow vehicle buying services

Hi,

About 20 years ago a friend recommended a private broker to me and I tried
it. I went down to the dealer's to look for the car I wanted, got their
"best offer" and then called the broker. I gave him the details of the
vehicle I wanted, he checked his computer for availability and then offered
to sell exactly what I wanted to me for about $2000 less than the dealer's
best offer. I've never bought a car from a dealer since. I've bought 5 more
cars from this gentleman over the years and have always saved significant
amounts, PLUS I don't have to go through the demeaning charades and rituals
at the dealership ("Let me check with the manager, etc.")

Years ago I once even had a dealer shake hands with me on a car sale for a
specific price and then change the price on the final bill of sale without
telling me. I looked carefully at the details, noted what he attempted to do
and went ballistic. I started shouting at the salesman in the dealership and
threatened to call the police. I told all the other customers around me what
had happened and several walked out. The salesman attempted to take me into
the back room ["Maybe we can lower the price after all."] but I ranted and
raved in the lobby for ten minutes at full volume before stomping out the
door.

The natural question is "How does the broker do it?" The answer is that he
doesn't have a showroom, real-estate expenses or employees, but he's been
around for a long time and knows the system backwards and forwards. He works
out of his office and gets all the info he needs on his computer. He
actually buys the car at wholesale from the dealers and then resells it to
me at a modest profit for him.

Look for a private car/truck broker in your area, and ask for references.

Subject: [A/S] Tow vehicle buying services

Hello,

I just barely escaped with my life from a classic car dealership buying
experience. I wound up walking out and almost ran back to my old truck.

I think the standard negotiating process with the old tricks of leaving you
to sit for lengthy periods of time while they "talk to the boss," doing the
dreaded four-square deal scribbled on a blank sheet of paper, and the
topper, when you walk down that narrow hall to be entombed in a small office
where the "financial and insurance guy" proceeds to try to recoup any
savings you fought for on the showroom floor....well, let's just say it
didn't work for me.

I will probably never submit to it again, and am wondering if anyone has had
any experience with car (or truck in this case) buying services? I know you
have to pay for their service, but if it will eliminate the traditional
showroom/dealership experience, I might be willing to do that.

I am also looking online through edmunds.com (and the search area they
allow) and Carmax, but I just don't think I'm ready for a franchise
dealership again.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Anne in Va
