I just went to dishnetwork.com to read up on the tailgater package
and discovered that you can get the antenna only for $350. This is
half what I paid for the automatic one on my roof a year ago! I wish
I had tailgater instead of the one on my roof - I sometimes have to
re-park to get the signal.
Tailgater is only compatible with certain DISH receiver models - see
the writeup. Maybe there is a similar DirecTV model.

The Tailgater is definitely an awesome device! I made sure to order one for my husband and I a little while ago when it first released and we love it! It’s a lot simpler than the automatic one we used to have on top of our RV and is so easy to bring along anywhere because it only weighs 10lbs. When one of my co-workers at Dish mentioned that it was only $350 for the device alone and broadcasts everything in HD, I knew I had to take advantage of that deal since we already had the required ViP211k receiver. If you need to purchase both, then that’s where you’d be looking at a $499 price tag, which either way, it’s one of the lowest priced portable satellite systems out there. I’d absolutely recommend it, especially since you said you have to re-park a lot with what you have now.
