Hi Ray,
Interesting and worthwhile question. I have Dish Network in my trailer,
my brother has Direct TV in his trailer... I wouldn't try to tell you
one is better than the other, both work well in general.
I can tell you Dish Network does not question or have any issues with
installing a regular residential Dish Network system in a RV trailer,
where as Direct TV has all kinds of issues and wants you to have it
installed in a permanent residence unless you go to one of their third
party vendors that markets high priced RV/Marine satellite systems. I
went through this last summer and the choice to go with Dish Network was
made very easy for me by the Direct TV Company's attitude about RV
installations...
As to programing and operation, I chose to go with Dish Network's
Eastern satellites due to having a better opening through the trees to
the south east and the Eastern satellites are higher in the sky where I
spend most of my time parked on the Cape. I'm quite satisfied with Dish
Network, I very rarely loose the signal here, only during severe
thunderstorms and only for a few minutes. A couple of issues my
brother has with Direct TV is that for me on Dish Network, I get TCM in
HDTV and he does not on Direct TV and he also says the signal goes out
when heavy clouds go over and in rain. He seems to loose signal a lot
more than I do but then I installed my own system and Direct TV sent a
local installer to set his system up. From the way he describes loosing
the signal a lot, I keep trying to convince him to get the installer
back and readjust the antenna. As he loves the old movies, the biggest
complaint he has is not having TCM on HDTV and doesn't seem to mind the
signal issue.
I think you have to look carefully at the programing packages between
the two companies to be sure you are getting what you want for what you
will be paying. Being able to compare between my brother's system and
what I have, I'm very glad I chose to go with Dish Network. And my bet
is you will find Dish Network is a lot easier to deal with...
