Re: [A/S] 1st motorhome

In the 80's Airstream integrated an Isuzu diesel onto the Chevy chassis
they were using. At the time they only built the classic shape "silver
bullet" motorhome.

In the early 90's they started experimenting with a diesel engined
fiberglass motorhome the "Legacy by Airstream". That label went away
shortly when they included the diesel into the Landyacht line.

Early diesels were on Spartan chassis. Support turned out to be quite a
challenge as the chassis was an assembly of parts each warranted by that
components maker. The Spartan's started out underpowered with only a
190hp engine no turbo, no intercooler. Eventually they changed over to
the Freightliner chassis which they continued to use until they stopped
motorhome production.
The Landyacht's motor started with a 230 hp Cummins and over the years
evolved to a 330 Cat all mounted on Freightliner chassis.

Aside from cabinet framing on some applications they used aluminum or steel.

The basic floor is a 3/4" marine grade plywood.

I would recommend you stay away from the early 90's Landyacht's. The
room to sidewall joint was a poor design and prone to leaking.

You can do more research on Airstream's website at
http//www.airstream.comunder Service>Customer Support where you will
find Specifications and Manuals etc. Lots of good stuff.

Another good source is Fred's Airstream Archives at

Don't want a cheaply built one and don't want to drive something that costs more than my house. Sooooo a used one is in order for us. A diesel is almost a must. I have 2 Mercedes Diesels and an Ford F250 Diesel. What chassis are Airstream motorhomes built on. Say from late eighties to early 2000's. I assume there is no wood in the framing. Any particle board on the interior? What is the floor made of? Do Airstreams have any recurring problems I should be aware of? Thanks so much. Roger
