I have a few minor things I may or may not get to before launch, but wondered if anyone had any fixes: (27' 1999 Safari)
1) Interior hall panel that encloses water pump is screwed down with about six screws. I want a quick-release system so I can reach down, crack the panel open for unexpected (or expected) cold weather and fasten back when done. I'd really prefer a system where the panel can be left open a few inches and not the whole door taken down (unless I need to for repairs) to keep the cats out of there.
2) Gas cooktop has one burner (left rear) that won't ignite using the starter. If you hold up a match or butane lighter it will, so gas is getting through, but the handy electric starter doesn't seem to work on that burner. I see no spark when trying.
3) I haven't even tried the oven yet. Stay tuned. I use it for storage now.
4) Bathroom vanity cabinets with the sliding mirrored doors---I put in some strips of self-adhesive insulation to fill in some of the gap so the doors wouldn't necessarily fall out on the road (still have to road test it, but if they make it down my driveway they should hold). Thank you, Charlie, for that suggestion. The mirrored edges on the upper tambour cabinet and the sliding doors are starting to flake and look tattered and worn. I am considering junking the whole thing and getting something new and different, but if there is a fix, or cosmetic coverup, that would be a lot simpler. I think. I'm sure the more expensive coaches had frames around the mirrors, but these were left exposed at the edge. I can't figure out how to glue a frame on them and still have them function in their allotted space.
5) Desk lamp suggestion....my daylight temp desk lamp bit the dust, literally, while moving, so I am in need of a lightweight but good light system I can attach to the rear desk to help with the low light situation. I only have about an inch desktop overlap so a clamp probably won't hold. Otherwise I'll just buy a cheap table lamp on the road and store it when moving, but thought I'd see if someone had a nifty product they are using on the road. Light quality is important to make up for the LED's I put everywhere else and now the lighting is, um, subdued.
6) Going back to the discussion several months ago about hanging pictures in an Airstream. I kept some of the messages but can't find the specific hanger someone used that pretty well eliminated sway and screwed into the wall. Did I remember that correctly?
7) I have a small wide flat screen tv I'm going to put on a wall mount. Do you just use bungee cords to provide extra road security around the tv or is there a better product? The new units seem to have an elastic band or velcro something based on pictures.
8) Rear exterior boot compartment has a stripped cam lock. I"ve tried different screws but they never seem to hold. Are these universal or Airstream-specific? Lockable would be nice but I hope I don't have to start carrying around more keys!
9) Wireless music speakers for the back bedroom? My coach didn't come with any speakers back here so before I try to wire some in, are there wireless solutions that would work, and is there a way to easily disconnect the front speakers at will and only use the back ones? The front ones are right over where the birds will be and I don't want to ruin their excellent hearing, or taste in Italian opera.
10) On the same vein, if my Airstream doesn't have a fancy AV system where the tv audio goes through the coach speakers, is there a way to easily retrofit that, or somehow get better audio from my under-sized tv/dvd player?
11) I need to replace the spline in the front window. I bought the (thicker) spline and have a tool for it, but wondering how to brace the window while open to push that spline in there. Do I need to replace the entire spline around the dark glass, or just snip the corners where it's shrunk and fill in that space?
12) Likewise, some of the window seal strips are coming out in pieces. I used simple hardware store foam stick-back insulation for now but not sure if that will hold up, or if I need something more substantial. These seal the spaces between the glass and the window frame channel from the inside, I think....
This should do it for a while. None of these are critical, but might make travel sweeter.
Thanks!
Anne
