[A/S] Water pump draining battery

We are dry camping and accidentally left the water pump switch on and now the battery is dead. Charged it back up, but should leaving just the switch on (pump not cycling) drain the battery in less than 8 hours? Or do I have an electrical issue? This was not the first time this has happened. I need to make a big sign over the door "water pump OFF?". This is a new pump and battery ~2 years old in a 1969 overlander land yacht 27'.
