Sorry, I misread your post. I now see that you were stating that maybe the PO had installed a anode rod and assuming that Anne's water heater was an Atwood, it should not have an anode installed, which is correct.

Regardless, Atwood officially states that installing a 3rd party electric heating rod voids any warranty and they should not be installed. They are likely just covering their legal behinds as they have no control over the quality of the 3rd party element and anytime you install something electric into a metal tank of water, there is all sort of potential risks.
