Re: [A/S] Batteries

While a malfunctioning charger can boil a battery, the more typical situation that the battery has a bad cell (shorted) and as a result, the charger is attempting to bring the battery voltage upto a setpoint, but the shorted cell prevents that and as a result the charger NEVER backs off the charge current and as a result, it boils the electrolyte. The best way to determine if you indeed have a bad cell is to get a battery hydrometer from Walmart of any of the auto parts stores. Insert into each cell and pull the appropriate amount of electrolyte into the hydrometer. Each cell should give approximately the same reading. A BAD cell will give a very different reading. THERE IS NOT CURE for a bad cell. ALL lead acid liquid batteries will eventually build up deposits at the bottom of the cell and once those bridge across the plates the cell is shorted. Again, a hydrometer will tell everything you need to know.
