I think the later locks had a roll pin instead of that bump. Could you drill it out and push a roll pin in there? If the ends of the slot are worn and that is making it too long I think a good welding shop could add a little metal to each end of the slot.
It's been many years since I owned and worked on a '74 27 ft. International but the lock was very fragile as I recall. I always tell new Airstreamers to gently push the door shut, never let it slam shut. If you have a separate dead bolt I'de just use that to lock up and only use the regular lock as a catch. The original lock is not much of a lock anyway… they can be picked in seconds.
