Last question first. You should replace it. The leaking is most likely
from perforations in the tank. Repair of the tank is difficult if not
impossible. The rest of the water heater is almost 40 years old.
Updating to a new one will bring everything into the 21 Century.
Replacement is a major project. Unless there has been plumbing work
behind it the water heater is plumbed with copper.
Turn off the LP gas.
First step is removing the connections on the back. Done from the inside
of the trailer. The LP gas connection will likely be on the inside.
Remove it along with the plumbing connections
From the outside, remove the door, disconnect the LP line if there.
Remove the fasteners in the frame and curl the outside lip of the water
heater out away from the skin. Use a butcher knife or something like it
to reach in along side the perimeter of the heater and cut the old
Vulkem away. Once completely cut loose the water heater will slide out
of the coach.
The replacement water heater is an Atwood brand. Depends on size, either
6 or 10 gallon and whether or not you want to upgrade to electronic
ignition and or electric heating element which one you get. Best prices
are usually online. Amazon and American RV come to mind as good sources.
Once you decide which way to go we can help you along.
Let us know.
