[A/S] Re: fantstic fan problem

Hi Polly,

I'm sorry the fans have been so frustrating. Tony is right: fans should be installed only after testing the line voltage. There are 3 different voltage possibilities going to those 14x14 Airstream openings: 12vdc, 110vac or 18vac.

Fantastic fans are made in 110vac or 12vdc configurations, but we stock only the 12vdc versions. 18vac is an obsolete voltage. It was used in many 1960s trailers...along with the other voltages. It powered both fans and water pumps. I haven't noticed it used for any other functions in that era.

The fastest solution for you at this point is to 1) read the owners manual for your year/model of trailer...I believe there's a schematic in it. If you don't have yours, 1964 was the first year for owners manuals from http://www.airstreamofficialmanuals.com ; 2) then test so you know for sure how your individual trailer is currently wired; redirect the wires from the 18vac to the 12vdc current.

As mentioned by others, the Univolts are best replaced, but that can happen later. For now, just get the wires that run up to your vents to connect to the correct power source. Again, this will require testing and tracing wires to figure out which are the wires that run up there. Label them with some tape flags when you get it figured out so the next owner of the trailer will know what you did. Also, when it comes to electric systems, please make notes in your owners manual for the next person.

By the way, when you remove old fans, you might see the voltage listed on the motor of the fan. But that's no substitute for testing.

If you determine after all this that you do have the correct 12vdc power running to those fans, call me and we'll figure out whether the fan has a problem.

The conclusion is that I have to replace the Univolt to get the fan to work? Expensive solution for what started as a simple fix for a fan that was noisy and leaked! So I guess for the upcoming rally in two weeks I will hope it is not too hot and I don't need a fan! I did mention when ordering the fan what year and model Airstream I had. I wish the supplier had mentioned the possible conflict of Fantastic Fan and Univolt! Since Vintage Trailer Supply's tech mentioned that the problem might be 19 volt supply when I went to them with this problem, I think they should have made me aware of it when I ordered as Fantastic Fan did with Kevin's installation.
