Hi Judy,
You can do either one. I bought a new one, but it didn't fit very well,
and I didn't have the tools to shave off the fiberglass that it was made
of, so I sold it. It came from Inland RV, maybe 8 years ago.
Then the minor cracks turned into a major wreck when a wind blew it
right off. I got some fiberglass resin and cloth from Walmart and
patched it on the inside, including reinforcing the edge where the screw
holes hold the top to the bottom and the ones that hold it down onto the
AC. Note that some of those, at least on mine, were dummies, meant for
some extra thing that I either never had or a PO took it off. Then I
sanded the outside pretty thoroughly and put a thin coat of resin over
the whole thing. It looks much better and still is holding up nicely
two years later.
I'm devoted to my old Armstrong, it thunders mightily, but out cools the
newer ones and will probably out last several of them.
