Based on the belief that your coach is a 1964, and that your original fans had a little black box on them, I may be able to offer a possible cause . . . particularly if you have the original Univolt. As originally installed, the OEM fans had a transformer in the electric supply to the fan. It is my understanding that the original Univolt supplied 18-volts to the system, and the transformers cleaned up the power and reduced it to 12-volts. Electricity is not my specialty, but one way of testing my theory would be to disconnect from shore power and try operating the Fantastic Fan on 12-volt from your battery . . . if it works properly, then you may have focused upon a problem with voltage produced by the Univolt.

I was present during the installation, and I do remember the question of whether my Univolt was original or if it was a modern converter. I suspect that the transformer issue may have triggered the question. When I responded that the converter was a new unit installed in 1995, they proceeded with replacement.

I find this information very confusing, transformers on fans??? The
fans are 12 VDC as delivered by Airstream with the original Univolt in
my 1964 Airstream Ambassador and I replaced the fans with a pair of new
Fantastic fan units last year. The original Herr (sp?) units I took
out, the small boxes are junction boxes only for connecting the original
fans to the trailer wiring... Changing the fans was a very simple
process with no difficulties and the new fans run great... When running
the trailer with its umbilical cord plugged into 117VAC mains, there is
a switch inside the rear service compartment door that switches the
12VDC fan and lighting load from the battery to the Univolt output which
I presume is a rectified 12 VDC... I say presume as I removed the
Univolt and replaced it with a 420 watt SOLAR system with its own
intelligent charge controller. However nothing in the trailer's 12 VDC
distribution wiring or the 117VAC distribution wiring has been changed,
its all original as Airstream wired it in 1963/1964... Only change was
to rip the old Univolt out and add the output of the SOLAR system in its
place.

There are NO and never were any transformers other than the Univolt
itself...

Now, having said that, I am fully aware that Airstream did not always
use the same components when they made these trailers back then. Its
very possible Polly's trailer is different and what I found in my
trailer does not mean her trailer was wired with the same components
even though its the same year...

Polly, trust me, regardless of the fan situation, get rid of the
Univoilt and get a modern replacement for it, its the best thing you can
do for your 1964 trailer in this day and age... I doubt this is the
problem with your fan, that sounds like some other issue...
