Silicone does not bond well to the aluminum. It does remain somewhat
flexible to the touch, but not enough to deal with the heat cold and
road vibration of the trailer skin. The area where the silicone meets
the skin will loosen, you will not be able to see that, and there will
be leaks leading to rotten floors and rusted out undercarriages.
If you have silicone on there now, saturate it with mineral spirits to
weaken it and remove it. Then use the proper sealants that are designed
for the skin and the openings.
It takes a lot of work to redo all the sealants on an Airstream. Don't
do it wrong the first time.
Daisy ( had to remove a previous owner's silicone and roofing cement
mess, grrr)
