I looked into this about four years ago, when I retired completely and came to the same conclusion you have, that there was too much work and not enough money in it. Then I put my name out to all the dealerships and campgrounds in my area, saying I would tow anywhere, anytime, for fuel, food, camping fees and $100 a day. I got a half dozen jobs, but none of those were brand new for dealerships. I did get calls from dealerships to deliver, with their vehicles, so I did that too. I also hauled some trailers to and from shows for some dealerships (short hauls like 20 miles or so) Definitely not enough to ever call making any money, but something to do in between times. My longest trip was Timmins to Calgary. Three days. My net profit on that trip was $200 after an oil change on the truck. (that is $200 for a week away from home)
