Re: [A/S] Getting ready to plunge into solar

Here is the body of the estimate email and I'll try to cut and past the numbers again and hope the columns hold. Anne

<<<...asked me to contact you concerning your Airstream power project. It sounds like you've got essentially three parts to this project; solar, batteries, and inverter. I want to warn you right up front that Airstream trailers typically require more labor hours for installation than do most Class-A coaches and 5th wheels. We've found this to be true based on the dozens of Airstream installations that we have done. The extra time comes in when working on the roof (we have to work from a boom to avoid walking on the roof) and accessing wire routes. We like Airstreams but realize that there is extra labor required.

Based on the limited information that I have gleaned from your e-mail exchange with xxx, I suggest that you have a 400W (possibly slightly more) solar charging system installed. I've attached a pdf file containing an estimate for just the solar installation that also includes a battery monitor.

As a rule of thumb, we recommend that when using a 2000W or larger inverter, that there be at least a 400AH battery bank to support the potential power requirements. A 2000W inverter would be required if you want to power a microwave and/or hairdryer. Heating and cooling generally require considerably more power than just running electronic circuitry common in computers and entertainment centers. In order to have a better handle on what size and model of inverter to recommend I would need more information concerning your 120Vac power needs (when dry camping and not running your generator). When dry camping and not running your generator, what 120Vac devices and appliances do you hope to be able to use?

If you decide to go the route of a 2000W inverter, we highly recommend a battery bank of at least 400AH. It's unlikely that a reasonable weight balance would allow you to put that much battery weight on the tongue. In almost of the installations where we have installed a 2000W inverter we have moved the battery bank inside (under a couch or bed)...>>>>
