Sama Airlines’ Last Flight

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 08:07 AM PDT

Sama Airlines, a low cost carrier in Saudia Arabia announced that it will cease its operation this week until further notice.  The halt of its operations is said to be due to their $266 million or 1 billion riyal loss and failure receive help from the government.

Sama Airlines catered to six Boeing 737-300 that flew to ten destinations until things went downhill.  Bruce Ashby, Sama Airlines' CEO, said in a statement that the cease of their operations is the only option they had after the handful of months they spent in trying to find financial help for liquidation for the heavy losses they suffered from October last year to March 2010, a large amount that they failed to recover from.

Ashby also mentioned that he had been waiting for the government's, an "aviation relief package" that would cover fuel funding and support for the losses they had incurred in the past as well as aid in the business's growth.  Unfortunately, Sama Airlines was not successful.  Ashby also stated that they have found investors who were willing to give financial support but they were not able to seal the deals in time.

Sama Airlines used to fly to different destinations in Saudi Arabia and in several neighboring countries like Syria, Sudan, UAE, Egypt, and Jordan.  Their CEO is still hoping that a financial aid will be found to allow them to resume operations as soon as possible.  However, at present, their aircrafts stay waiting until the company finds a solution to make them zoom into the air once more.

Finnish Mountaineers Set up Sauna at Mont Blanc Summit

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 07:57 AM PDT

Stripping down to your underwear at 15,782 feet above sea level amidst the snow is possible—if you brought yourself a portable sauna, that is.  Just like what the group of four Finnish mountaineers did when they climbed Mont Blanc or Monte Bianco, the tallest peak in this portion of Western Europe.  This mountain has been a favorite summit to be conquered by mountaineers and in time, it has been known as the La Dame Bianche, which is the French term for "The White Lady."

Last Saturday, the four Finnish men set off to climb Mont Blanc.  Since they need a good weather condition to set up the portable sauna, the men climbed in darkness and were able to reach the summit at dawn at sub-zero temperatures.

Quickly, the men set up the portable sauna that uses a customized sauna oven to burn the wood-fire in sub-zero temperature and high altitude.  When they finally finished putting up the small portable sauna, the men stripped to their underwear and enjoyed the sauna and the fantastic view at the summit.

Kari Härkönen, one of the Finnish mountaineers said that the portable sauna got too that it was refreshing to freshen up with the -5C temperature outside.  These Finnish mountaineers have trained with other pro mountaineers to condition their body to adapt to the altitude and sub-zero temperature.  So do not try this feat without the proper precautions.

Manchester Airports Spends $15 Million to Welcome the Big Boy: Airbus A380

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 07:50 AM PDT

Okay, this week has been boring when it comes to news about the Boeing 787.  So let's check out what's new with the Airbus A380 instead.  In the previous week, we told you that the Airbus A380 is flying to Manchester, England the following month.  We are surprised to know that so much work has been done and how much money has been spent in preparing the Manchester airport for the arrival of the Airbus A380.

Emirate Airline, Middle East's biggest major airline company, will starting flying the Airbus A380 in Manchester Airport starting this September 1, 2010.  This is actually a first that the Airbus A380 will fly in and out of an airport that does not belong in one of the world's major cities.  The Airbus A380 is an enormous plane, so big in fact that the Manchester Airport spent around $15 million in making their terminal suitable for the operation of the Airbus A380.

Today, all the necessary preparations have been finished but the work started eighteen months before the news that the heavyweight Airbus A380 would be landing on the Manchester Airport for a quick visit.  The Manchester Airport built a new parking space for the Airbus A380 and this includes a state-of-art docking system.

Manchester Airport sure gives the big boy Airbus A380 a special treatment.  The renovations also include strengthening and upgrading every space that the Airbus A380 will touch.  The airport even moved some of the perimeter fences that lined the runway to give the Airbus A380 plenty of room to maneuver without any trouble.  In terms of safety precautions, the Manchester Airport also installed new fire equipment and other safety gears in case of emergencies.

With all these renovations, the Manchester Airport is proud to belong to a Category 10 airport—those that operate with the world's biggest aircrafts and come with an extensive array of firefighting and rescue system that is administered by the Civil Aviation Authority.  At present, there are only 17 Category 10 airports in the world.
