I'm guessing it has been frozen, and the copper has swelled enough so it
isn't 1/2" anymore.
You may have to keep going until you get to a section that does measure
1/2". Probably why the solder joint didn't hold either.
Plan B is to find a real plumber willing to sweat the joint properly.
